Jiankou Great Wall is not only a photographic hotspot but also a hot travel destination due to its unique style, steep mountains and beautiful scenery. 'Jiankou', is translated as 'Arrow Nock' in English,
for the shape of the mountain is like an arrow, with the collapsed ridge opening as its arrow nock. This is one of the most scenic stretch of Great Wall around Beijing. This is also the real great wall, not something like touristic Disney-style walls restored to please you.
Jiankou Great Wall is located in Huairou County, Beijing, 73 kilometres north from Beijing city, connecting Mutianyu Great Wall in the east, and Huanghuacheng Great Wall in the west, zigzaging 9.3 miles from 'The Ox Horn Edge Wall' to 'The Nine-Eye Tower' via 'The Beijing Knot'.
The major section of this Great Wall is built along a mountain ridge with large cliffs on each side, and due to the lack of repairs, it is now one of the most dangerous sections of the entire Great Wall.
Construction Materials of Great Wall
Before the use of bricks, the Great Wall was mainly built from earth, stones and wood. Bricks were used in a lot of areas during the Ming Dynasty, as well as materials such as tiles and lime. Stones cut in rectangular shapes were mostly used to build the foundation, inner and outer brims, and gateways of the Great Wall.
Before the Ming Dynasty, the Great Wall was built from board frames and, although not very solid, could withhold simple weapons like swords, spears and bows. But during the Ming Dynasty, gunpowder became available. The musket, blunderbuss and cannon appeared. Due to the use of these weapons, more solid bricks and stones were required to build a stronger Great Wall.
There are several scenic sites that tourists must see, one of which is the watch tower known as "The Eagle Flies Facing Upward". This tower appears extremely high as it was built on a mountain which forms the highest section of the Jiankou Great Wall. The eagles can only do so facing upwards before reaching the top of the tower when they pass through here.
The "Sky Stairs" is another famous scenic spot with a precipitous stair whose angle of elevation is 70 to 80 degrees. The stairs are so narrow that it is barely possible to obtain a foothold.

Other scenic areas include the Beijing Knot (the meeting point for three walls coming from different directions); the Nine-Eye Tower (a watchtower with three layers, and nine holes which look like nine eyes on each side); the Zhengbei Tower (a good place to watch the sunrise and the sunset) and, the Cloud Stairs (a section of the Jiankou Great Wall which rises like a staircase into the white clouds), and many other watch towers.
If you are a hike-lover, take a day of to see the less travelled Jiankou Great Wall and give yourself something really worth boasting about.If you choose to sleep on the Great Wall, maybe you can catch a 3-in-one event: sunset, star-studded sky, and sunrise.
Because it’s so steep, Jiankou is not a particularly popular section of the wall, and in fact they do not even sell admission tickets to this section. Since there will not be any vendors selling water or snacks in the area, a backpack filled with these things is essential.
